Star Runners is my fifth novel, but I am ashamed to say the other four rotted on a hard drive out of a fear of sharing them with the world (other authors will know what I am talking about). I always wanted to edit them and really make them shine, but working two or three jobs always seemed to take up too much of my time.
When I was encouraged to take Star Runners to the next level, I immediately researched my options. The nearly unanimous opinion of experts speaking to indie authors said to never create your own cover. I did have experience in graphic design and thought I could do it myself. Still, the experts must stay this for a reason.
I recently started to listen to Joanna Penn’s “Creative Penn” pod cast. If you don’t already listen, do yourself a favor and check it out. Ms. Penn mentioned 99 Designs during an episode and I decided to check it out.
99 Designs provided great options from graphic designers from all over the world. I had the good fortune Andrei Bat submitted an option. Amazing. We went back and forth with some ideas we had about the cover, but he absolutely worked his tail off and created a cover I am very, very proud of having represent my book. In fact, I stare at the cover and just marvel. It was the first time I saw an artist visually create something I had only crafted in written form. It was humbling, fascinating, incredible and thrilling.
As I continue to explore the world of publishing, Andrei Bat will always be my first choice for my second novel. Thank you, Andrei! Thank you Joanna Penn!
